CHICAGO — A new Fiat six-speed transmission, called the G365, could provide Chrysler with the dual-clutch transmission it lost when its partnership with Getrag Corp. in Indiana collapsed last year.
A dual-clutch transmission offers the fuel economy of a manual transmission with the ease of operation of an automatic.
Fiat has been working on a small dual-clutch transmission, Frank Klegon, Chrysler LLC's executive vice president of product development, said in an interview last week at the Chicago Auto Show.
Chrysler could use such a transmission, he said.
Klegon stressed that engines and transmissions were part of larger discussions Chrysler and Fiat S.p.A. are having as part of Chrysler's viability plan it will deliver to the U.S. Treasury Department this week. Under an alliance announced last month, the Italian automaker would take a 35 percent stake in Chrysler.
Chrysler had planned to source a dual-clutch transmission from a joint venture with Getrag. But that deal collapsed last fall after Chrysler sued Getrag, claiming that the German transmission maker's funding for the venture was inadequate.
The Fiat transmission will come in three variants: a manual, an automated manual and a dual-clutch. The manual version will debut in Europe in June, the dual-clutch version at year end and the automated manual in the first half of 2010
Report: Fiat to ship Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo 940 to the U.S
If its proposed partnership with Chrysler LLC is complete, Fiat will speed up the export of some European-built cars to the United States in an attempt to set the stage for a possible U.S. production around mid-2011.
“We are currently working on a plan to begin shipping the Fiat 500 minicar and the Alfa Romeo 940 to the U.S. in about a year,” a source familiar with the matter told Automotive News Europe.
The source said that the Fiat and Alfa models will be sold through Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealers. The number of the two models shipped to the U.S. from Europe will be very small to test the market for a higher-volume production by mid-2011. Eventually, Chrysler will begin producing the Fiat 500 at its Toluca Mexico plant and the Alfa 940 at an unknown U.S. location.
The insider said that Fiat is also looking to base the next Alfa Romeo 169 in Chrysler’s 300 platform.
The proposed alliance would give Chrysler access to four Fiat platforms for production in North America, from minicars to upper-medium models. Chrysler would also get 1.4- and 1.8-liter gasoline engines and a new six-speed transmission. <----watch out for this motor in a potential SRT-4 producing more than 230hp, in a lightweight package.
Fiat also is considering basing its oft-delayed upper-premium Alfa 169 on a Chrysler platform. The Italian automaker is looking at the LX platform that underpins the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger
I am liking the news so far, and that one alfa is a sweet looking ride to be sure. I wonder how it would go with the CSRT-4 motor in it heheheh.

1) Those are mild refreshes at best (though they look ok)
2) The "STARBURSTS!!!" are completely embarrassing.
The grand is new from the ground up.

The question is, can it actually GO OFFROAD. If it is a Jeep it MUST be able to off-road.
Considering a previous statement of "NO MORE faux off-road vehicles from Jeep" from Press.
The Jeep looks very WJ inspired too(headlights, grille, general shape),
not much Trailhawk (if anything, the shape of the wheel-wells and grille),
and maybe a little GMC Acadia (soft flares, some body/roof lines)
