Hello.
You don't know me and this may seem kinda wierd..I just saw your thread about insurance and wanted to ask you a question, hope you don't mind. I'm over here in Iraq for about another year or so..I'm going to have a brand new SRT4 shipped and waiting for me when I get to the states...I'm wondering what the best things are to say when applying for insurance, IE what I use it for, how far I drive daily, etc. Also what plan(s)/converage(s) should I get to get the best balance of safety/insurance and affordability? at the time of application I'll be a 21--nearly 22--year old male with a clean driving record(assuming tickets, etc. are still removed after three years). Another thing, what national insurance company would give thebest rates? ie state farm, progressive, geico, etc. etc. Sorry for the noob questions..I don'tknow much at all when it comes to insurance..Thanks much!
Enjoy the states
The things that affect your insurance premium are:
How long you've been driving - no altering that
Zip code - that could be altered if you can stand to have your mail sent somewhere else
Type of car - ...
Driving Record - Don't get tickets, ever. If you get one, TAKE THE TRAFFIC SCHOOL OPTION. It's boring and shitty but you end up saving thousands at your age.
That's it really. As far as coverage goes, you may want to consider what you could be sued for. If you own a home and have a family, you need high limits. You crash into a benz and don't have enough coverage, they'll take your house. If you're single and have no assets, it still won't hurt to carry at the very least 30/60/30. I would advise nothing lower than that .. if it's not to expensive, 50/100/50 is nice and safe. Explanation:
30 - Amount your company will pay to fix one person you hurt with your car
60 - Amount your company will pay to fix any amount of people for one incident
30 - Amount your company will pay to fix any non-living thing you damage with your car.
A day in the hospital costs no less than 10 grand nowadays and the average car on the road is worth 32K ...
As far as insurance companies, you get what you pay for:
State Farm, All State, Farmers - Expensive, great service (for the most part)
USAA, Progressive, Any 1-800 type insurance company - Cheaper, bad service.
If it's price you care about, open your phone book, find the biggest ads and call em. Seriously, biggest ad, lowest prices. If it's service you want, call the "big three" for quotes and go with the lowest one.

Is that average new cost or average blue book value for the used car or what?

Jim
I have had State Farm since I was 16. I have gotten quotes from a lot of different companies, GEICO, Progressive, USAA, AIAA. **NONE** of them were less money at the same coverage as State Farm. USAA was the closest and they were about 10% higher. ... Explanation?

Me too. And State Farm rocks for motorcycles.
My question is similar to one asked before, but definently not the same. If I removed the crash bar to install a big FMIC, but ADDED something like a slow-boy racing crash bar, would that be alright if they investigated? Would it even help my case at all?

is there such a thing as color matters on the rate of your insurance?
if you have being with your insurance company for a while, if you get into accident, do they treat you better? compared to someone joined for less than a year and totalled their car.

that's an average given to me by my company

discounts, ie loyalty, mulitcar, home + auto. In general, the 1-800 insurance companies are cheaper for people with more points. In general, that's who's reading this thread.

If Slowboy has no certification from a federal safety commity (whoever the helll governs that), then no way.

1. None whatsoever
2. You're lucky if they treat you the same. A good amount of companies allow you a "one time" incident though. Kind of like a suspended bust.
On the custom thing. In the honda community, in order to get a RHD imported into the US, it has to be at least 15 years old, because then it is considered a 'custom' car. Is this true? I want to import a RHD CRX, and want to be able to insure it as well
my insurance just went up to 2800 a year since i lost my good student discount from high school. i was wondering if i could go on my own insurance without me being the owner the car. If not what are some other cheap insurance companies that my parents could switch to maybe lower my insurance
Hey my mom has a 05 toyota camry, and a 1998 eclipse RS... btu she pays 570 dollars a month!!!.... and she said tahts lik the lowest option...she also has a clean record... can u please tell me the "cheapest" insurance in florida? thank you
Over the last month I've called my insurance agent 3 times to get a quote on a brand new white '05 Evo RS. The first time I didn't have a VIN so naturally it was just a ballpark estimate. I called back a couple days later with the VIN of the car I was expecting to buy and I was given a quote. It was actually $200 less than my SRT-4 policy so naturally I was pleasantly surprised. My insurer's explanation was that the SRT-4 model was tagged as a high risk car in their systems. OK. Fair enough. A week later, just to make sure I had all my eggs lined up before I bought the car, I called one more time and had them run another quote on the same VIN. The cost of coverage was exactly the same as the last quote they gave me. I was totally pumped!
Last weekend when I sold my SRT-4 and called the Mitsu dealership about the Evo they told me that the car (the one with the VIN I was using for insurance quotes) had been sold, but an identical vehicle was on the truck and scheduled for delivery within 48 hours. That vehicle arrived on Monday and it was the car I bought on Tuesday.
I called my insurance today to add the Evo to my coverage and remove the SRT-4 and, low and behold, the coverage on the Evo is now going to be $328 more per year than I had been quoted just a week earlier. I'm beyond pissed but they have no explanation...not even any intelligent guesses.
I've gone to the trouble now to run a Carfax for both VIN numbers. They are identical except only the branded title check came back on my car. I'm guessing that's because the paperwork is still on the way to the DMV or where ever Carfax pulls their data from. Anyways...what the hell is going on her brother Bin4ry? I'm losing my mind now because my wife thinks I was bullshitting her all along. I used the lower cost of insurance as a BIG selling point for buying this car. Now I dunno what to do. I'm thinking about switching insurance companies but what if it actually IS the systems and not user error on the part of my agent? Anyways...sorry for the long post, but any advice, help or direction you can give me would be awesome.
BTW...I can PM both Carfax reports to you if you want to see them.
