Stock Block and transmission price question

As the title says, I have a local guy selling a stock block and transmission. He said the motor went due to a blown head gasket. The block would have to be cleaned and machined. The transmission shell with internals in it but the syncros are shit in it. So my question is what's a good price on the set? Or should I find out some more information? This is going to be my first build!

Thanks

Garage
At a bare minimum I'd drop the pan and make sure the bedplate is not cracked before making ANY offer.

If it is cracked then the block and bedplate are toast without some costly machine work.

All other crap like scuffs in cylinders (to a point), warped head, and uneven block deck can be machined as a nominal fee.

I told him if everything checks out to be good I'd give him 500 for the set. He told me he'd give me all the internals and let me decide what is good on the transmission...

Synchros are costly and difficult to find OEM ones, especially if the teeth are messed up.

Only the lining rings made out of carbon fiber I believe, not the gears. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.
The attached pic is a picture of an OEM syncro set.

I think a 3rd gear synchro is like 500+ bucks from the dealer....if they are not discontinued by now

Only the liner is available aftermarket

go ahead...change yours too now; again

So if the gears in the syncro are completely shot and I can't find a new oem set I'm screwed??

Yes, pretty much. Unknown what is wrong though until the transmission is cracked open.

Is just the 3rd gear hard to find?

I'll have to ask the guy what all is wrong with the transmission and what syncros are shot.
