Default SRT4 question

Hey guys im new to the forum and for the last year or so I have really wanted to buy an SRT4 well now is the time, but after reading alot of information on this site I am almost afraid to buy one. There seems to be some problems with the car and I am in college so if it breaks I can't shell out a bunch of money to fix it. I just want a stock srt with a BOV and maybe an exhaust. How reliable are the cars if they don't have many mods?

thanks for your advice,
Landon

Depends. standard 3/36 but the dealer gave me an extended warranty for 70,000 miles. They are very reliable if left stock, just like most other production cars these days. Modded properly, they are reliable too. Just take your time and dont rush into something stupid that looks too good to be true.

Bought an 05 w/ 50k miles on it "bone stock" turns out engine did indeed look stock but ran 12.9's .... Month after I bought it the output shaft on the trans stripped out $900 bucks.. Point of the this : Make sure its ALWAYS been stock or is stock, not even a bov or rice plate.

I was in the same situation as you last year exactly around this time. I'm in college too and I didnt' want to buy a car that would give me trouble. So, I bought a stock srt with about 37K on it. I have done some mods, BOV, CAI, boost controller, wastegate and I'll be doing exhaust soon. No problems so far. As long as you don't run the car hard ALL the time, and keep it well maintained, it should not give you any issues

I don't know where you get that idea unless it is from reading this section of the forum, but you need to take that with a grain of salt, if people have a problem they come here to post about it looking for help, that doesn't mean every SRT owner out there is posting here, just those WITH problems.

Problems with the SRT-4 can be broken down as follows:

75% of the problems = incorrect installation of a part, incorrect modification of the car in some way.

20% of the problems = abusing the car while failing to maintain proper upkeep.

5% of the problems = actual valid issues that are of no fault of the owner/previous owner.

And if you've heard that the SRT has TONS of problems on another forum, then that's just straight up bullshit, jealous crybaby a-holes will say anything about the 'neon' to a) try to make the car look bad and b) to make up in some way for their own self/cars inadequacies.

yea you make a good point, most of the reviews of the srt on edmunds.com gave a 10 out of 10 on reliability.

The ONLY problems I have had with my car were caused by mods.

Car died on me while driving, previous owner left a cable hanging next to the turbo, it melted agianst the engine grounded out and blew some fuses.

Car wouldnt start on me one day, stock battery on a 05 and it was -25 the night before, replaced battery good to go.

The only real problem I had was the TPS issue, but that was simple enough to resolve. My tranny shifts like butter and my 3rd gear doesnt pop out, car has been super reliable and Im nearly pissed I have the warenty lol

Sounds about right from what I have been reading. Congrats on 7000

Off the top of my head....

Quirks:
Large turning radius
small fuel tank
tire drone
exhaust drone
no cruise control
shifter "feel"
causes an addiction to modifications
daily shit eating grin

Common issues:
Bad OEM boost gauge
Throttle Position Sensor failure (broken wire)
Wheel Bearing failure
Third gear shifting issues
'03 and early '04 axles
wheel hop

Other issues:
ABS sensor failure
water leaking into passenger foot well
clutch plate bolts loosen on early '03 models
Sunroof jumps out of track at high speed (keep window closed)
leaking tail lights
bump steer
high insurance rates
