I'm gonna try and run the tank to completely empty. When the gas light first comes on I should have 3 gallons left, right? And when the gas light starts blinking that means I have 1 gallon left?
To the OP, how many miles are on the car? If it's more than 40K, have you changed you're fuel filter/FPR yet?
29k. I have a feeling that I'm just not used to the small tank yet. I'm going to run it down until the blinking gas light comes on and then calculate my MPG.
I get 30-34mpg on the highway and about 24mpg in town. Im also big turbo so its quite a bit easier to stay out of boost. I would do what these guys have suggested and get yourself some new o2 sensors

Seriously, WTF is going on? I fill up yesterday at a gas station near my university, then I drive home (all freeway miles). After 54 miles of all highway driving my gas needle is already below the 3/4 line and almost at the 1/2 line mark. 54 miles and I use almost half a tank? I didn't even go into boost at all, and I'm completely stock. Since buying the car a month ago I've already spend $282.55 on gas alone. I seriously have to force myself not to drive the car because it's costing me a fortune.
Estimated 22mpg city and 30mph highway my ass.
From full to bare empty. I get 280 to a tank. divided by 12 its around 25 or so miles per gallon. maybe a little less or so, but above 20
i got 128 miles to a full tank a week ago, but i was on a road course doing 120+mph wot straight away runs. Make sure your brakes arent dragging/sticking. do a 20+ mile drive down the freeway and exit the freeway trying not to use the brakes at all. I use freeway rest stops to check mine. I coast into the rest stop and start gearing down until i am about 10mph or less, then use the ebrake to completely stop. get out and check to see if the rotors are hotter then just warm. after 20 miles on a freeway and not using the brakes at all, they should be cold to the touch.
do you have heavier than stock wheels on the car? is your trunk full of un-needed stuff? extra weight in the vehicle causes mileage to drop. do you have a 180 degree thermostat? to cold of a motor will cause the pcm to add fuel to try to warm the engine upto operating temps. are the wheel bearings going bad? is your 02 sensor working properly?
is your car an 05? I heard something about a reflash for 05's due to bad mileage. the dealerships were suppose to do the reflash before the cars were sold. maybe yours got by before the reflash. The reflash might have just been a rumor, but it might be worth a call to the local dealership to ask them about any tsb's.
my 05 has an average of 24 mpg for the life of the car. best mpg was 34.**mpg on a 390 mile trip down the freeway. gas light came on at 342 miles and took just under 10 gallons to fill it back up. worst mpg was around 8 mpg on a hot august day at the race track doing 20-30 minute sessions

Im going with he doesnt know how to drive it to get the good MPG's...
Always put another gallon in after the pump clicks (12 gallon tank, clicks at 10) and fill it slow not fast.
Under 3.5k rpm in the city
Under 3k rpm on the freeways
This formula got me a consistent 260 Miles to a tank which came out to about 23 mpg.
All freeway miles I was able to get 280-300 a tank. 26-27mpg
Are you letting the car warm up? I now live only 1.5 miles from work and when I do not let the car warm up I get BAD gas mileage.
have you checked the fuel lines for a leak?
Have you checked the tire pressures?
Have you checked for a boost or vacuum leak?
Have you gapped your plugs?
Fuel injectors dirty?
If you have over 35k miles I would replace the O2 sensors.
I would make sure the pcm, if an '05, has the reflash. You may just want to get the pcm reflashed with a performance reflash.
Map clamp and a tune could lean it out and give you a bit more power and mileage.
If after that your mileage is not up to par,I would suggest an electronic boost controller and trim the boost to 5 psi if your just commuting.

i would consider asking the person who you bought the car off, why they sold it. then ask them if they had the same problem you are having. i usually got around 20 mpg.
I get about 23-26 city and well over 30 highway, and I do enjoy the car quite often. I would say you have something wrong to be using that much gas, as mentioned before like the O2 sensor or something.

Mine gets 25-27 mpg mixed driving to work, 29-33 mpg highway. This is on a S3 car with 99,100+ miles on the odometer.

Meh, i get 15-17.5 mpg city. Reason being is, I DO alot, and i mean ALOT ALOT of short trips. My car doesn't even have time to fully warm up, thats how short my trips are. Thats why i get bad gas mileage.
I can get 28-30 mpg on cruise on highway at 70 mph with big turbo. As long as no one gets in the way and ya gotta slow down and speed up alot. Or pass a bunch of slowpokes. Get a bit better now than with stocker. A couple mpg more.
