Default Noise... then smoke

About a week or so ago while I was sitting at a light, I started to hear a faint, but noticable high-pitch whistle. When the light turns green, I accelerate and it goes in sync with the RPMs (getting higher as the RPMs raise.. etc.). I tried not driving it that much, simpy because it's my only means of transportation at the moment. This past thursday after bowling, I go start my car and run back in the alley to get my stuff. When I come out, I don't hear the little whistle I've been hearing the past week... instead, I now have white smoke coming out of the exhaust! I start driving home slowly and it goes away. Sitting at a light, I look behind me and it looks like I'm spraying for mosquitos! I baby the car home and park it!

Bear with me cause I'm not to familiar with turbos... but the noise I heard a week ago, could that have been the bearings going in the turbo? Also, I read a few posts on here, and they mention the seal going bad. Could that be the smoke I saw as well?

Sorry if they sound like newb questions, but I'm still learning about turbos, and I've already had an Ass-load of problems with the car since I got it.

Thanks in advance everyone!

White smoke represents coolant burning off in the motor, which points to either a bad head gasket or a bad throttle body gasket.
