Hey guys, I'm new here. I just got an 2003 Dodge Neon SRT-4, its been beaten, battered, broken, molested. That's where I come in. The car runs and drives, like shit, but it drives.

Bads:
Someone SERIOUSLY has no idea what to do with cars... They used speaker wiring for power / ground wiring for gauge pods, switches, among other things.... The car is primer black, all door jams and truck / hood is yellow... -.-. Looks like they lived on a dirt road which is AWFUL. There are plenty of oil leaks, I believe a boost leak. The car will be stripped, cleaned, touched up, wires reran, replaced, among other fixing of the interior exterior, missing light lenses, third brake light, bunch of cheap LED replacement crap.
So some of the tear down started today I'll post pictures as soon as I can find a webpage to upload the build onto to transfer them on to this page.
Welcome. Sounds like you got the same deal I did. Ran like crap, ended up being burnt valves. Car looks like someone went off roading in it, tore up the front bumper, splash shields, rocker skirt and fog light
Yeah, I plan to pull the motor out and get the heads redone, new valves etc, and have them clean it up, then while thats off im doing ARP headstuds. Full gasket set on everything to fix leaks im planning on doing adjustable cam gears once I get that researched with the blue timing belt, it already has solid upper motor mounts and such. It's fun building them up, sucks that people dont know how to take care of things however. Good luck on the rebuild, hopefully you can get it all worked out and up and running. I plan on spending an arm and a leg but all the labor will be on me, except machine shop work obviously.
Thanks, so far its still sitting on jack stands waiting to get finished. Gotta love the rain and no garage lol. Good luck on yours!! Ill keep an eye for progress posts
Library Slideshow by bigturboskittle5531 | Photobucket this will be the link to my photobucket updated with all the work being done to the car. i'll slowly update via explanations of whats going on with the build as i update the pictures in the slideshow.
As stated before the car has been baaadly molested, here you can see alot of the damage and shit that I have already pulled out of the car to clean the floorboard, buying new carpet, deep cleaning seats console glove box, dash, etc, this thing is getting a deep deep deep cleaning of everything on the interior, every carpet piece has come out and im even debating on pulling the headliner as well before I go to the car wash and pressure wash the inside of this thing, gently. I figure i'll start the deep clean on the interior and then the motor will come out and i'll start on the engine bay, then the exterior of the entire car after that.... this car will look like a totally different diamond when I get her out of the rough. If you have any questions or some bits of advice please let me know i'll be glad to let anyone know something, or take some peoples suggestions into consideration.
Nice looks like someone that can finally turn a wrench got one of these.
What did you pay for it?
Looks like it has a big turbo?
The blue gates belt is nothing special, guys have run big numbers on stock belt. Plus it will be under the timing belt covers so who cares what color it is. Unless your one of the guys that runs without covers. DD or track car I"ve never been a fan of not running the covers. Over time debris will get in there and eat that cam seal, tensioner and cause damage, but to each their own.
This seems to be the condition of most of these now a day's. There was just a post on here of a CL listing 9 out of 10 and it was a total POS and that was just from the pics. Can't imagine what other crap was wrong once you saw it in person.
I traded a 2002 GSXR 600 straight across for the car. He wanted 4000 for it i probably got it for around 3k is about what the bike was worth.
it has a precision 5531 turbo on it
the timing covers are already missing on this one. And you can imagine that ill be keeping it immaculate so im not worried too much about dust and debris getting in there as the car will typically get cleaned weekly. Itll be a show / highway run car when im done.
As for the turning the wrench part this whole interior came out SUPER easy it was stupid easy. Im a certified tech for subaru and hyundai so i have plenty of tools to do all the work. its just a matter of finding the time. With work and 2 kids thats the struggle
LOL everything is basically stored in the car for now. I have other car parts and motors in the shed and Im out of room. The wife hates parts in the house. Yeah, I bought the car under the impression it needed a couple tires and a cam position sensor. More than I bargained for. Interior is clean, front bumper and pass side skirt/rocker ground FX needs to be replaced. Few paint touch ups and the 3D tail lights need to be replaced with tinted tails. Has the SXT spoiler on it. I like it but want a stock one. Hope to get on it tomorrow, but if it rains it will be a no go
Haha thats how it always works, I thought this one might just need a tune and an alignment, tires etc... Then I saw all the dirt from gravel roads... And that started the tear down process, and the oil leaks. My daughter is out of town for 3 months so I have that time to put it back together before the wife kills me . The motor work will mainly wait until tax return season again, then she'll get done up all pretty. our body shop is welding my decklid holes closed then it will be sanded and painted with the car, I plan to stay without a spoiler on this one, i'd like to sell all the tail lights and headlights and go with some stock ones again or tinted but we will see when I get to the exterior of the car. The plan is Interior, motor, exterior.
Yeah, body is gonna suck. I need to find a black front bumper and not have to sell the house to get it. My wife is over it. I still owe on the truck I traded and it was running and needed nothing. Car is on month 2 of sitting. Out of nowhere today it rained. I hate this state lol
Well got some more of the car cleaned up, the amount of dirt and dust underneath the carpet and all the trim panels was astronomical. I've never seen so much dirt and trash and gunk in a vehicle before. The underlining of the carpets and everything was yellow. So looks like I will be painting back over a lot of the interior of the body with yellow again where it has peeled off just to prevent rust and such on the interior of the car underneath the carpet. Luckily my wife has been helping with the cleaning process today, we scrubbed on it for about 3 hours and are no where near done. I'd say we have at least another 2-3 hours left in cleaning just the dirt and dust and gunk out. I just gotta keep telling myself that its worth it lol. This car just may be the death of me i'll have some more pictures up in a few hours, hopefully before dark, the phone is on the charger as we speak and as I eat dinner for my break. Now, I have a question for anyone who can answer. Do these come with LED lights in the cluster? I pulled my cluster out the other day and it looked like they had been replaced but half of them don't work... The temp gauge is the only one that lights up. Now I know that you can remove the lights from the cluster, but all the ones in there have been replaced with LED, is there a kit I can buy to replace them with LED's again or should I just buy the regular ones and replace them all with the typical "194" (I believe that's right) bulbs? Thanks for the help and good wishes, will update in a few hours.
Alrighty, more updates! The interior is all back in the car! and much cleaner than before! The car still needs to go to a detail shop and deep clean the carpet and the seats. as far as all the trim goes other than a few minor touch ups its clean! The dirt and mud and shit from up under the carpet is gone, thank god. I even took out all of the weather stripping and cleaned it all. The car is still rough, still plan to do all new speakers / stereo system and I think i'll be comfortable with the interior of the car for a daily driver. Next I think is the engine bay, I posted a lot of new pictures of the engine bay, turbo timing area mounts etc. It's pretty rough like the rest of the car was when I bought it, unfortunately, but its coming together nicely, and luckily 0$ spent so far, which is always a bonus, just some know how and some elbow grease got the job done up till now, now there will be a few 30 packs of beer in store for the motor pull.
I have a couple questions for the motor pull.
How much power is necessary to start thinking about going to a billitt input shaft?
(I'll be at or around 400-450 or so my plan is)
I know built internals for this motor are not that expensive, how much can the stock shit handle?
Are there any parts I need to consider replacing before trying to put this car through 400-450 fwhp?
When the motor comes out I plan to do away with the power steering and just loop the line and basically have manual assist steering. Reason being, there are many leaks so far in the system and I don't feel like replacing the entire system. I plan to flush every fluid and start new with everything, meanwhile changing rear main, front crank seals along with coolant gaskets and head gasket etc. So while the motor is apart might as well get any advice of stuff to swap out while its out.
Here is the new slide show for any of you that are interested in how its coming.
