I was surprised once when my real estate agent (a 50-something year old conservative woman who drives a convertible Solara) asked me what I drove, and I said "SRT-4," expecting to get the "What's that??" question... Instead, she said, "oh yea, that dodge performance small car with the twin muffler-less exhaust, right? Those things are fast..."
I looked at her like and I've been listening to every bit of real estate advice she's given since, haha.
I would have asked her if she needed/wanted a sex slave.
i really dont care what it is...its stilll quick....the srt-4 just came out of nowhere and scared a few people when b4 it was just a neon...its like saying an EVO is just a lancer.....it just gets more respect because of the history behind it.....i honestly dont care and if anyone says anything i laugh right back at them which pisses them off even more. for example they drive a v8....in my opinion a v8 is a POS why??...cuz their FUGLY...and they are slow stock, usually....throw all the info and opinions u want at me about a v8 and ill still think the same of it.....
I am sorry but there is nothing like the sound of true V8 power. My Lt1 Ta made 400 rwhp my father-in-law has it now and everytime he starts it up everyone just .
V8's 10 years ago were nothing special running 14's and 15's but today the V8's run 13's and much lower. Very hard to make a stock lower end Lt1 make 400 and it takes alot of time and money but the rewards are great. Having a car that you can drop into 2nd doing 45 and punching it and white smoke the tires is fun. Having a car that peels out through the 1/8th mile and still run a 14.2 at 102 on street tires is awesome, having a car leave 3 long burn outs marks with a small space between each set because you shifted into 2nd and 3rd is a memory for most. My friends still talk about it and that was over a year ago.
I love my little srt and it serves my purpose good functional daily driver with some very nice power. I no longer have a road grater. Plus the stage 3 clutch made the TA very difficult to drive in traffic.

If you say "I drive a Dodge SRT-4" then people respond with yea but its still a neon.
If you say "I drive a Neon/Its just a neon" people say Its not a neon, its a SRT-4.
If you call it a neon, then people expect less of it. If you get other people to call it a neon, and say you race a 03 Cobra and beat it, and he gets out on video and says "I just got crushed by a Neon." then you need a towel to clean yourself up.

I bought the car new, wanting something that I thought people would think was slow. It's part of the fun of dishing out whip ass. now the the cat is out of the bag it seems every one knows what I drive.sometimes shit heads drive up on me hard almost running in to me.

been there with over 400 boosted rwhp and i was less impressed than you were, even if it would stay sideways at a 45 degree angle from 30-65mph and even if it would get 70mph scratch - when i'm over 400whp with the neon on half the cylinders i'll probably be more impressed. i hope.

When i first got it and people would ask me what i drove i would say SRT4 and 99% of the people have no clue what that is so i got tired of having to explain it. So now when they ask me i just say "I drive a neon on steroids". Then they ask well why do you race a neon!? and my response is "cause my neon makes 400 whp!"
The SHO was DETUNED from the factory. You can't have a Taurus beating the snot out of the Mustang GT's of the late 80's early 90's can you? Hell, I would easily hang with my dads Mustang GT and start to walk it past 100mph! The SHO might have only had 220hp but above 4K RPM's, it would sing. Plus, if I stayed out of the secondary intake runners, the bitch would get 28mpg.
BTW, the car now has 235K miles on the original motor
One of my good friends has an SHO and well it doesnt impress me at all... I ran him when i was on my stock turbo from a 50 roll and i amtracked him bad. I wouldnt even start to call that a race it was pure annihilation.
Wow, I never really expected this big of a response to my first post..
I just got tired of the dude at work lol
It doesnt really bother me that people call it a neon.. thats all it is really. what does bother me a little bit, is the dude at work who constantly says it.. its just something that gets old after a while..
Someone at work will ask about the car, i'll explain a couple things that they are curious about.. and sure enough, that guy will pop in with his little comments lol
Its like, ok dude, yeah.. its a neon.. get over yourself! lol
There is a friend I work with that previously owned a c5 Vett Very nice car! He razzed me for awhile .. I gave him a ride in the SRT, he was impressed.
He said he wanted to race sometime, but we never got the chance. He ended up selling the Vett. He's still in school, and needed the cash for tuition, cant say that I really blame him!
The guy that bought the Vett from him payed something like 22-23k cash!! that was the most hundreds I think ive ever seen at one time! lol
But, at any rate.. yeah, I love the lil thing. I have been thinking about selling it though, I drive it wayyy too much.. and I dont have another daily driver yet. I just dont want to put tons and tons of miles on it.
My biggest worry is, selling it.. then some kid is gonna get his hands on it,.. and it will be in the junk-yard a few weeks later! I have seen wayyyy too many of these things getting totaled by young drivers. One person in a car is bad enough, but alot of the time.. its been when showing off to girls.. or buddies that are also in the car.
Risking your own life is one thing, risking someone else's is a completely different story.
Sorry, dont know where that little tangent came from..
Another interesting little tidbit lol the little 2.4 banger at 17.5 lbs/boost breathes roughly the same amount of air as a 5.2 liter .. lol in a perfect world anyway..
I saw the thread title and thought it was 2003 again.
I say it how it says on my insurance ID card: "Dodge Neon SRT"
When surrounded by the sounds of rattles, road noise, smoke wisping from my steering column, the screaching tweeters, the 41ft turning radius, the hard starting, the rough idle, the squeaking belts, the cracks in my seat bolsters, and a third gear syncro that just plain disagrees with me...well, you can't NOT say 'it's just a Neon'.
But by realizing this it reduces it to what it's intended purpose is. A cheap car that is easily modded and gets you a fuck load of fun for the money. Sure, your friends may disagree, but you know you love it.
Yeah, I told a guy the other day that I had a Dodge Neon SRT-4 since he saw me looking at some performance parts online. As soon as I told him he started laughing asking me why the hell I would try to make a slow and shitty Neon fast.
So yes, most people are unaware of what an SRT-4 is.

The rough idle and shitty ride are on purpose. The rest.......shitty Neon......AND I LOVE MY LITTLE NEON!

Well anybody thats ever been in the car was impressed and it didn't matter what they drove. And if your car was going sideways at 60mph then you had suspensions issues. No point in building a car that can't put the power down and go straight. My TA would lay straight as an arrow lines due to upgraded suspension, boxed lower controls arms, and a strengthened rear differential cover, subframe connectors. It all adds up to create a package. Yeah if that car just had 400 hp without everything else then yes it wouldn't be impressive as your wasting so much energy in everything else that going on. Body flex, suspension flex, deformation of rear diff. Just like building a 400hp SRT - prolly gonna have traction bars, motor mounts, upgraded bushings, it's all part of the package.
And yes a 400 hp srt is going to be more impressive than a 3600lb 2 door boat that looses around 20% or more of it's power to driveline.
But a 400hp srt is not making the power at the motor the ta is. And still there is no sound like the sound of raw V8 power.
Glad to hear difficult starting first thing in the morning is a neon thing. And I never considered a neon only considered an SRT-4 they are different though many things are similar but just like impreza versus wrx or lancer versus evo.
Would I own any of the non performance versions hell no.

no suspension issues, the sideways was due to the best gear man expert in the state jerk that installed the 4.10's decided to add 4 bottles of friction modifier instead of 1 bottle. even after i drained and refilled and added the correct amount of FM it was still fugged up but i didn't mind - it still went forward and pulled like hell, and i was getting used to the sideways pull. it had upgraded control arms, springs, struts and subframe connectors, btw. and about not making the same power at the motor due to drivetrain loss, what are you talking about..a 2% or 3% difference? difficult starting? did you ever start a kenne bell mustang, any thime of the day, with the kb tune? mustang would start in about 1/2 to 1 second before the kb, and then the cranking times jumped to about 5 or 6 seconds - my srt starts at least twice as fast as the mustang did.
I've noticed and it was mentioned in here that the srt has difficult starting. Compared to the TA I'd kick the key on let the fp prime and click the ingition and it would crank instantly. The srt takes a few seconds 2-3 maybe 4. And no I have never had a sc mustang but my sc impala cranked instantly and it had a roots blower.
I am not trying to change your opinion or anything like that but the majority of people really appreciate the sound of a strong running and sounding V8. I could cruise through town running 30 in 2nd gear and every guy and some girls that were outside would be looking as I'd drive by. Unless you 4.6 (99+) or 5.0 (92-95) was highly modified plus the sc then it doesn't count. I am not saying it wasn't fast. I am talking about 400 rwhp all motor cam loping, exhaust cracking, raw V8 power. My ta was still essentially an old school 350same motor since the 70's with some updates to cooling and ignition, and internals but the block is the same. It was referred to as a 350genII. Compare exhaust from header back lt1/ls1 and the lt1 wins. Most ls1 guys will agree unless they are cocky but the ls1 guys here in town would always say "wish my ls1 sounded like that".
And just curious but how much at the motor hp would an srt-4 have to make to put down 400?
I was thinking there was like a 20 hp at the wheels difference between dodge #'s and whp #'s. Thats like 10% loss. The ta's motor making 400 at the wheels would have to be around 475-500hp at the motor. LS1 fbodies were making 310 gm #'s and laying down 285. Stock Lt1's made 285 gm #'s and laid down an unimpressive 220-235.
