new car designs are ugly

I swear i dunno what happened but its like ever since 2000 more and more cars are becoming uglier. The Honda civic used to be a nice looking car from 92-00. But after that, very circular and luxury not sporty at all. And the same has happened to 90% of cars, they are all very expensive and ALL very circular! none of them have sporty designs anymore. If you look at any new cars i cant think of one that doesnt look circular and totally lame. The one exception is the Ford Focus RS which is actually the first cool design ive seen since the NSRT. Hell the SRT4 is a perfect example, 03-05 beautiful car. Then the caliber srt4, much uglier and less sporty than its predecessor in my opinion. What is happening to all the car makers to make there once sporty cars so ugly? Here are a few cars that have followed in the manner i speak of.

*Mitsubishi Eclipse*, from 92-99 i think it was a very nice good looking car, not since.

*Honda Civic* Their design reached its best time with the 99 Civic Si, after that, it became a prius looking tart.

*Integra* I used to be the proud owner of a Type R, amazing car, i loved it as much as i loved my SRT4. Totalled it, anyways the Integra had one of the sleekest best designs ive ever seen. Then when they renamed it the RSX in later years and chagned the design, it went downhill just like the rest of em, circular and ugly.

And tons more, its not that the new look is sooooo ugly its more that they are all the same looking, they are all very similar, anyways i just had to vent this

I came across this link a few minutes ago and I seriously cannot believe my eyes... I can personally say that I have seen this kind of stupidity occur, but what good is it gonna do to tell anyone? It's obvious that the cop on the right was "playing" or whatever you wanna call it.

Responding to a call is obviously going to be the story, but I believe that the truth will come out and they (both cars, cause the other one wasn't going slow either) should serve significant jail time.

Any classic mopars here?

Just seeing if anybody here has true classic mopars... I'm talking like the 70 cuda, 69 charger.. Back when mopar actually had some balls...

My friend has a 75 Plymouth Duster he's been rebuilding.. It originally had a slant 6, but he rebuilt a 360 for it.. It's an awsome car... He had it dyno'd it ran 358 horse at 3,800 rpm, and had 390 ft pound of torque at 3,800 rpm... It's not good at the drags, he runs around 14.5 at the quarter mile.. But on the highway, it takes alot to beat him...

Ill post pictures when I get home.. So does anybody have an old mopar? I'd like to see it, tell me what motor is in it, and it's specs..

Thanks

my $60 garage alarm system

I wanted to have a basic alarm/theft deterrent for the garage and called around to several local alarm places. My garage is detached and has electricity but no heat or phone lines. Every place wanted me to do the same thing - buy a cellular tower to install in the garage. This was not something I wanted to do. I was (somewhat) willing to pay the monthly fee for the alarm service but I did not want to add another cell phone bill to the mix.

Next step was to scour the net looking for a stand alone system but after weeks of searching I could not find what I wanted. I really just needed something that could be left in the cold, had a motion sensor and an alarm/siren and did not operate on batteries. No one makes a basic system like that that I could find so I decided to build my own.

Went to home depot and bought the following items:

outdoor motion sensor with 2 light sockets - $14.95
2 bulbs for sensor - $8
16v transformer - $10
knockout electrical box - $1

Then I stopped over at radio shack and bought a 108db 12v piezo siren for $9.

I wired everything up and mounted it on a piece of scrap mdf. I had an old shopvac that has a blown motor so I cut the cord off and wired it into the system for power. I spliced the transformer into the lines for the light sockets so that the alarm only sounds when the lights go on (motion is detected).

Image: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a357/nineballots/911%20audio/100_4962.jpg

This gave me the basic system that I wanted but the problem was arming and disarming the system. I did not want it to go off every time I opened the door. The solution was found at Target for $10. I bought a westinghouse remote control electircal thingy. It has one piece that plugs into an outlet and then has 2 outlets built into it. It comes with a wireless remote and it's intended purpose is to allow you to turn christmas lights on and off without having to unplug them. Works like a charm for my needs.

Now I have a motion sensor alarm that is loud as hell (12v siren getting 16v), 2 flood lights, it can be turned on and off from the car, no batteries to worry about dying in the cold and only goes off if someone enters the garage from either door. Total cost was around $60 after tax for everything.

Gauges for FI

I'm finishing up buying parts for my build and I'm at the point of gauges to monitor the car. I already have a Turbosmart E-boost controller/gauge but I am going to end up selling it because I want to run different gauges.

I went ahead and bought a 3 pod a-pillar replacement and now I'm looking for the gauges to put in there.

Originally, the type of gauges I was going to go with were going to be boost, wideband a/f, and then an oil temp gauge.

I can already monitor my duty cycle, air intake temps and my water temperature via another source. I reason that if I have a wideband a/f, I will be fine without a fuel pressure gauge, and I will buy a new sensor for my stock oil pressure gauge to make sure that's 100% working fine and use that as my oil pressure gauge.

I was set on going Defi BF but they do not offer any type of wideband a/f gauge, the BF's are all 60mm and the wideband a/f gauges I've found are 52mm so I just thought it'd look weird to have #1 two different size gauges and #2 two different brands, so I started looking in to AEM's digital gauges.

I can run their wideband a/f, their tru boost (which would give me boost and controller back) and their oil temperature. I would have all 3 the same size (52mm) and all three matching. My question is, how are these gauges? The Defi's are around $230 a piece + the need to buy a link controller, so really we are looking around $750 total for 2 Defi BF gauges and controller. I think would also need a wideband a/f AND a boost controller.

With the AEM I could probably be out the door with all three gauges at around $750-$800 if I find a good deal.

*_Volkswagen Steals Toyota's Crown as World's Largest Automaker_*

The people want an empire, apparently, with that unassuming little black VW bug at the head of it.

The U.K.’s Guardian explains, "Volkswagen-Porsche has overtaken Toyota to become the world's largest car manufacturer as the German group benefits from state-backed stimulus packages around the globe." VW has "produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, outstripping its Japanese rival which has seen four million cars roll off production lines since January."

Ironically, VW reached the milestone in part by taking over Porsche – which it was forced to do after Porsche failed in an attempt to take over VW earlier this year.

"Of course," Autoblog notes, there is "some number play involved" in the Guardian’s numbers. "We're talking about the combined entity VW-Porsche, which has built 4.4 million cars to date, which is roughly 400,000 beyond Toyota's mark. However, Toyota halved its production earlier this year and shut down all its plants in February." VW also "benefited much more than Toyota from the European cash-for-clunkers programs," though Toyota saw more sales than VW spurred by the U.S. version of the car-swap program.

The news doesn’t just push Toyota down a notch. Jalopnik notes that VW has "passed Toyota and GM at the top of the heap." America’s largest automaker – the world’s largest just three years ago – now sits in third globally.

The change may not be permanent. The Guardian notes that Toyota "has the capacity to make 10 million vehicles a year but it expects to make seven million vehicles in 2009" as production picks back up. VW, however, may see its production increase long-term enough to stay ahead, or at least to take the title again even if it loses it later this year.

After all, Autoblog notes, "VW's also got the edge on Toyota" in the huge Chinese market, "where it has spent years introducing models."

Sort of a sidenote to the whole Porsche/VW story. If any of you haven't looked into that entire story, it is an interesting one. I sort of expected this (VW largest) was going to happen, not really a surprise but still interesting.

My sister's '03 Neon has been having consistent hard starts for a long time now. It takes like 4 seconds of cranking to start however it runs fine after. I don't think this is typical varying gas grades hard start. The starter cranks strong and I recently changed the timing belt, plugs and air cleaner and it was a problem before I did any of that.

Do you think that it's a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter?

Rev app for the iPhone

Rev application (http://devtoaster.com/products/rev/index.html)

Basically this app hooks up to the OBDII port and tracks a bunch of things and monitors in real time. Has anyone here ever tried this? I have Dynolicious, and love it, but I'm wondering if this has more capabilities as far as tracking A/F, which I can't seem to find an answer to. You can even clear engine codes with this thing app....pretty crazy.

Anyway, if you can track A/F on this thing, and I've seen some piggy-back systems that do it, I'm all over it.

Anyone tried this thing?

Whiskers!

*EDIT*
After looking at the devices needed to hook this up to your OBDII port, there's no real reason to have this thing for monitoring. The devices needed to get this hooked up to your vehicle are $150 and up, which puts you in Wideband/Scangauge prices. To me this isn't worth it at that point.

I still think the app is pretty impressive, but the additional costs aren't justified.

The future: Spark Plug Lasers

*Spark plugs may be replaced with lasers*

*Say goodbye to spark plugs, a 19th century technology which, according to reports, could be supplanted by lasers.*

Bye bye spark plugs, 'ello lasers.

London's Daily Telegraph newspaper (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/5803066/Cars-to-be-started-by-lasers-instead-of-spark-plugs.html) is reporting that Ford is working with the University of Liverpool (http://www.liv.ac.uk/) to develop a laser ignition system for internal-combustion engines (http://www.cnet.com.au/videos/ask-us/ask-us-what-s-the-difference-between-petrol-and-diesel-engines-22460180.htm). That's right: engines with lasers strapped to their heads.

The laser beam is delivered by a thin, fibre-optic cable to a focusing lens that would take up much less space than a spark plug, allowing engineers greater flexibility in designing valves and cylinders. The laser beam can be split to ignite the fuel mixture from multiple points deep in the cylinder — as opposed to a spark plug which is located either at the top or bottom of an engine — making for a more efficient burn than a spark plug can achieve, reducing emissions and getting better fuel economy. Another advantage to the laser system is that part of the beam can be reflected to a receiver and used to gather data on the fuel mixture and the quality of the burn.

And this isn't merely a research project, as there are working prototypes of the system at the University of Liverpool laboratory. Ford, which has eagerly been adopting fuel efficiency technology such as electric-power steering and six-speed transmissions, reportedly will use the laser ignition system in some of its cars over the next couple of years, then spread the technology to the full range.

Currently internal-combustion engines that don't use diesel fuel require a spark plug to cause the engine's air and fuel mixture to ignite and release its energy. Diesel, or compression ignition, engines don't have a spark plug, but instead compress their air and fuel mixture so tightly that it combusts due to the pressure.
