i think it depends on the shift light you get...but to use my MSD pen light with the tach driver i had to buy the pill module (aka RPM activated switch, MSD p/n 8950). I stick in various resistors that tell the shift light when to light up. I tried to go right from the tach driver and couldn't do it.

Just something to consider when selecting lights. I know both MSD and autolite make integrated switches in some of their lights as well. The autolite one is nice as the pills go into the front of the light so no need to go under the hood as I have to.
