360 came out a year before PS3 in the US and Japan, and a year and half before PS3 in Europe. They are only trailing 360 because the 360 came out first. The 360 had over 10 million units in homes already before the PS3 even came out yet right now they are less than 5 million units ahead.
Also Microsoft is creating a controller that is just like the Wii's and working on adding Mii's to there system. This whole generation is about copying, if it works then the other people copy it. Big deal it works for us consumers.
