As I said, Blizzard had the marketing that Verant (at the time, SOE came later) did not. Verant was a startup unlike Blizzard which was already dealing in the millions at WoW's conception.

Not only that but at the time that EQ started, online gaming was not the gigantic behemoth that it is today. Everybody has a PC and broadband these days, whereas 10 years ago it was not nearly the case.

And EQ definitely did have mass appeal, half a million people subscribed to a pay-per-month game back in 2001 was unheard of.
