I only said to get taller tires if you don't like people bugging you about the gap. lol There are low profile tires that last a long time, but most of them don't perform well. And about the performance on 18's... you might not notice the difference driving on your own, but if you race against a stock SRT-4, you'll see a BIG difference. But like you said, your car is just for daily driving and not autocross, road, or drag racing, so don't worry that you lost some performance.
