The pumps update on the price on the fly and are usually well ahead of the big sign. If the prices change while you're there, it's easily possible that you paid a different price than someone else.
They don't bait you with a lower price on the sign and then sucker you with a higher price at the pump. It can work the other way too; the sign can be higher than the pumps.
