When I first installed mine (a week ago) I did do a side by side comparison. I put the ultra in the drivers side and left the stock bulb in the passenger side, and went out for a ride. I definitely noticed a difference in color (less yellow) with the ultra and it did shine further than stock (not that much further though), but the difference wasn't huge. I guess I should have said it differently in my first post; there is definitely a difference, but it's a small difference and not worth the $50 (IMO).
