There's no reason to turn it off. It doesn't really turn off. It just stops acting on messages and turns off the LED. The processor still runs. So, I leave mine on all the time. It bathes my left foot in blue light.
If it locks up, you can just unplug it from the harness and reconnect it. That way you don't disturb the PCM.
