Yah, suprisingly it gets used alot... but its probably the single most harsh thing that can be done to a database server that has to search 4.2 million posts every time its done

Don't know what tools you use but can your search program be more specialized. As in search in specific groups aka SRT-4 Technical Discussion. That way it only queries portions of the database instead of the whole thing.

If you've already got a new server with a killer processor(s) don't know what else you can do that will be significant

The advanced search feature already did this. When searching you could search the entire database or you could select specific forums you wish to search for information.
