Not exactly. You can push the button to turn it off and a scan tool will still function correctly. You will just see the automatic transmission error codes again because they will pass through.

However, pushing the button doesnt exactly turn off the unit, it just disables it and turns off the LED. This reduces the current by a good amount, but it still draws some current.

Either way, you can calculate how long it will take to drain your battery. Assuming the smallest battery you could possibly use is about 10 Ah and our current consumption is about 20ma while enabled and 10ma while disabled, the battery would last about 500 hours while enabled and 1000 hours while disabled.

So basically, probably not something you need to worry about.

If it is really a problem for you, you can remove the unit and install a shorter plug to allow you to continue to use the OBD port. But, I doubt that will be a problem for anyone.
