It will slowly destroy the journal bearing. The reverse flow of air causes axial stress on the bearings. You can check your turbo shaft play to see the condition of the bearings. Remember that even a new turbo will have a little bit of shaft play when it is idle as there is no oil flow occupying the surfaces. As the wear becomes worse the shaft play will get so severe that the compressor wheel will come into contact with the housing causing damage to the wheel & housing surfaces.
